10 tips for a balanced life

Health, what is health? According to World Health Organisation: ”Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The definition has not been amended since 1948. A definition that might be in need of some innovations. To me the definition sounds rather overwhelming – ”a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being..”

If you ask 100 people what is meant by physical, mental and social well-being you will most certainly get 100 different answers. To me health is about balance. Balance between different important aspects in life. All parts in your life might not be complete but still you might feel a sense of joy, fulfilment and balance. Try to find your balance in life.

1. Choose a well balanced diet, all year around. Here it is of utmost importance that you listen to your body. What does your body need. We are all different, meaning our bodies act differently to certain foods. You might suffer from allergies or from an illness demanding extra precautions when it comes to some foods. When a low carb high fat diet might suit one person another person might feel excellent choosing vegan friendly foods. So never compare your plate with others. Of course there are always room for food inspiration. Be inspired by other people, and their knowledge.

2. Think about the planet. Our environment is suffering more and more. Food waste or food loss is a huge problem in the western world today. Over 100 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the EU (2014 estimate). If nothing is done, food waste is expected to rise to about 126 million tonnes by 2020. (www.ec.europa.eu) Of course it’s not only the consumers that have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste, farmers, food manufacturers and processors play a huge role too. It’s pretty simple, as a consumer be sure you don’t buy more food than you actually can eat. And stop eating when you’re feeling full.

3. Eat according to season. Go organic. Eating seasonally often means eating locally grown foods, so it’s good for the environment too. The foods that are in season are usually less expensive, packed with nutrition and they taste better too, much better. Try to always look for the organically grown foods.

4. Move your body and be active. Our bodies aren’t designed to sit in front of a desk eight hours a day, that is why everyday workout is so important. And I don’t mean you need to go to the gym for one hour a day or run 10 km seven times a week. Simply take the stairs instead of the elevator, clean your apartment, leave your car at home and walk or take the bicycle, play outside with your kids or animals, have sex, do some light yoga and stretching exercises after you woken up etcetera. Then add some sweaty workouts 3-4 times a week, or how often is actually up to you and what you’re used to.

5. Dare to dream. Have a goal. Life is too short not to be living the life you always wanted. There are more to life than paying bills. To have a goal and to have something to strive for will leave you with a sense of fulfilment. And remember, that dream is yours, despite how nuts it might seem to anyone else it’s your dream.

6. Spend time with your friends and family. Spending time with the ones you cherish makes you feel less stressed and more happy.

7. Live in the present. You cannot change what has already happened. And you cannot prevent certain things from happening. Sometimes it’s just best to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Don’t stress over things you cannot do anything about at this particular moment. Seize the day (Oh how cliche that sounds…) but it’s actually true. Stop for a while, look around and put away your mobile for once! And smile to strangers.

8. Think positive. Positive things happen to positive people. Simple as that. Of course we are allowed to feel sad, but remember that a positive thought in the morning can change everything.

9. Travel and explore the world. If you have the opportunity to go travel, do it. You will not only learn more about yourself, but about different cultures and countries and meet people you otherwise wouldn’t have met.

10. Breath, relax and do nothing. Yes, sometimes it’s best to do absolutely nothing, and to feel completely okey with it. Turn off your mobile and computer and breath. To constantly be online and available can be really stressful and to learn how to deal with the silence and the present moment is oh so important in this internet era. (tip 7.)

And one last tip, so actually there are eleven of them.

11. Be kind. Why be bitter and evil when you can be kind-hearted? Be kind to everyone you meet, you never know when or where you may see them again. Being kind is the new black.
