How to be more present

‘Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect.’

 

Most of our time is spent in the past or in the future, rather than the present moment. According to science there’re great benefits of being more present.

By being mindful, you enjoy your friends and family more, you enjoy your food more, everything you’re doing, you enjoy more. Life simply becomes more joyful.

 

How to be more present-minded;

 

  1. Pay attention to your breathing. This is one of the simplest ways to become more present. Take a few minutes every day focusing on your breathing. Focus on the inhale, focus on the exhale. Breath in deeply, exhale fully. Allow yourself to bring all of your awareness to your breath.
  2. Listen to the sounds. There’re most likely many sounds that you don’t pay attention to when you’re caught up in the past or future. At the moment when I’m writing this I don’t hear anything, but then I stop and allow myself to listen. My neighbour coughing, a child laughing, the trees blowing in the wind.
  3. Be in nature. When seeking stillness, one of the best things you can do is to enjoy nature. Listen to the sounds, inhale the tranquility and fresh air, exhale negative energy that no longer serves you. Watch the sunrise or the sunset, take a walk in the forest, be present and watch how effortlessly nature is unfolding her treasures.
  4. Do one thing at a time. When listening, listen. When eating, eat. When walking, walk. When working out, work out. While fully engaging in the activity you’re doing at the moment it will most probably become more joyful.  
     
  5. Practise mindfulness while cleaning or cooking. Doing normal household chores such as cooking or cleaning can easily turn into a mindful practise. I always thought of cleaning as a form of meditation. While preparing dinner, be aware of all the flavours taking over the entire kitchen, the texture of the foods, the sound of the knife against the cupboard when chopping vegetables. Watch how a normal, and sometimes even boring, daily routine can become a calm and relaxing practise.
